Shopping Tips for the Busy and Health Conscious Person

• Create a shopping list before you go to the grocery store.
• Don’t shop HUNGRY.
• Shop the perimeter of the store and avoid the center aisles where the highly processed foods live.
• Spend most of your time in the produce section and choose a rainbow of colorful fruit and vegetables.
• Choose “real” foods like an apple rather than “apple flavored.”

• Less sugar is better for you.
• Avoid food with cartoons on the label targeted to children.
• When possible, avoid products with more than five (5) ingredients listed.

Food Labels

Start by reading the ingredients: The actual substances in the food are listed from greatest to smallest concentration.
• Ask yourself “How many servings am I consuming?”
– If you ate the entire package you would double all the calories and other nutrient numbers on the label.
Check The Calories: Fat Calories divided by Total Calories equals the percentage of fat the product contains.
– Are you shocked when you do the math?
Look at the Nutrients: Eating too much fat, saturated fat, Trans fat, cholesterol or sodium increases risk for certain chronic diseases.
Fact: Foods of plant origin do not contain cholesterol!
• Ask this question: “Are the sugars in this product naturally occuring or are they added?”
